Japanese numbers: counting from 1 to 10,000

Japanese has two sets of numbers. The Sino-Japanese set (いち, に, さん…) is used for prices, times, dates and most counters. The native set (ひとつ, ふたつ…) counts objects up to ten without a counter word. Four, seven and nine each have two readings, and which one you use depends on the word that follows.

Examples are written in kana. New to it? Start with the hiragana chart.

Good to know

  • 4 is usually よん and sometimes し; 7 is usually なな and sometimes しち; 9 is usually きゅう and sometimes く.
  • Above ten, numbers are built by multiplication and addition: にじゅう (2×10) is twenty and さんじゅうご is thirty-five.
  • Some hundreds change sound: さんびゃく (300), ろっぴゃく (600), はっぴゃく (800). The same happens with thousands: さんぜん, はっせん.
