FAQ - is Open Lingo free?

Is it free? #

Yes. Open Lingo is free to use, including every course and spaced-repetition review.

Do I need an account? #

Not to try a lesson. You need one to save progress across sessions and devices.

How do I contact support? #

How can I give feedback? #

Join the Discord to report problems, suggest courses, or ask what is coming next.

Which languages are supported? #

Korean, Japanese, Spanish, and French. A Portuguese course is in closed beta. See Languages for what each course covers, and the roadmap for what is queued.

How is it different from Duolingo? #

Open Lingo pairs structured grammar lessons with FSRS-6 spaced-repetition review, plus handwriting practice for the Japanese and Korean scripts, and it is free. See Courses and Flashcards and reviews.

Is there a mobile app? #

Yes, on iPhone: the same courses, reviews and stories as the web app, synced between them. An Android app is next; until then, the web app works on Android phones in any browser.

Ad-free time and sync #

Ad-free time and cloud sync time are one clock. You add time to it by spending lingots in the Shop (quests are a good way to earn them), supporting Open Lingo on Ko-fi, and, in the iPhone app, watching a rewarded ad. Sync limits are not switched on for everyone yet; if they don't apply to you, sync simply keeps working. See Sync and ad-free time.

How does Ko-fi support work? #

Pay on Ko-fi with the same email as your Open Lingo account so the payment can be matched. Every payment gives your profile a Supporter badge. A monthly Ko-fi membership adds 32 days of ad-free time each month. A one-off payment of $3 or more (or the equivalent) adds 30 days; $1 or more adds 7 days.

Does it work offline? #

Reviews are stored on your device first and sync when you are back online, so a session on a train still counts. Sign in on another device and your schedule follows you. To check what is still waiting to sync, or to sync now, open Settings › Sync & diagnostics.

Can I bring my Anki cards? #

Yes. Anki import matches your cards against the course so words you already know are credited instead of taught again.

Is there a streak? #

Yes, along with daily and weekly quests. Missing a day is not punished harshly: streak freezes, bought with lingots from the shop, cover days you skip. See Quests and streaks.
