How French numbers work

Regular up to 69

Zero to sixteen each have their own word, and seize is the last of them. Seventeen to nineteen are ten plus a unit: dix-sept, dix-huit, dix-neuf. From twenty to sixty-nine the tens take a hyphenated unit: vingt-deux, cinquante-cinq.

The et un rule

Twenty-one through sixty-one, and seventy-one, use et with no hyphens: vingt et un, trente et un, soixante et un, soixante et onze. Eighty-one and ninety-one do not: quatre-vingt-un, quatre-vingt-onze. Every other unit is hyphenated: vingt-deux.

70, 80 and 90

French has no separate words for seventy, eighty or ninety. Seventy is sixty-ten, soixante-dix, and it keeps counting on from sixty: 72 is soixante-douze, 79 is soixante-dix-neuf. Eighty is four twenties, quatre-vingts, and ninety is four-twenties-ten, quatre-vingt-dix, up to 99, quatre-vingt-dix-neuf.

Belgium and Switzerland say septante and nonante, and parts of Switzerland say huitante. Everyone understands both sets.

When cent and vingt take an s

cent and vingt take an s when they are multiplied and nothing follows them in the number: deux cents, quatre-vingts. As soon as another number follows, the s goes: deux cent un, quatre-vingt-trois, deux cent mille, quatre-vingt mille. One hundred is plain cent, never un cent.

mille never changes

One thousand is mille, with no un, and it stays mille however many: deux mille, dix mille, neuf cent mille. French writes the thousands separator as a thin space or a dot (1 000) and the decimal as a comma.

About the hyphens

This page uses the traditional spelling: hyphens only inside a number under one hundred, and spaces around et, cent and mille. The 1990 spelling reform allows hyphens everywhere (vingt-et-un, deux-cent-mille). Both are correct and both are taught.
